 Hendersonville is a city in Henderson County, North Carolina and is located southeast of Asheville. As of the 2000 census, the Hendersonville’s population was approximately 10,000. Hendersonville is traditionally known as "The City of Four Seasons" and attracts tourists from all over. The town has a well-preserved Main Street and adjoining downtown areas with many restaurants, antique shops and boutiques located in buildings that housed key local business until the mid-1980s. Its architecture reflects the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

 

History

 

Henderson County was founded in 1838 and Hendersonville was founded shortly after. In 1900, 1,917 persons lived in Hendersonville; in 1910, 2,818; and in 1940, 5,381 people lived in the area. Like the county, the city is named for 19th-century North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Leonard Henderson.

There are seven parks in Hendersonville that are maintained by the Henderson County Parks and Recreation Department. There is a total of over 259 acres of playing fields, recreation facilities, woodland and playgrounds. The Parks and Recreation Department also sponsors special events that include The March for Parks Bicycle Tour, Easter Egg Hunt, Four Seasons Senior Games, Fourth of July Festivities, Farm-City Day and Halloween Fest.

North Carolina Apple Festival

Hendersonville is home to the famous North Carolina Apple Festival which is held every summer. Apple orchards range in size from small family backyard plantings to some over 600 acres. There are a number of orchards where you may pick you own apples.

 

Jump Off Rock Park

Legend has it that more than 300 years ago a young Indian maiden leapt from this rock to her death when she learned that her lover, a Cherokee chief, had been killed in battle. Indian lore to this day maintains that on some moonlit nights the ghost of the heartbroken maiden can be seen on the rock. Views from the rock during daylight hours are breathtaking of the valleys below. The rock itself is surrounded by landscaped grounds.
